Israeli start-up company, Future Meat Technologies, seeks to open the world’s first lab-grown meat facility; The headquarters are to be located south of Tel Aviv; Nahmias: the only way to meet this demand is by fundamentally reinventing animal agriculture.

Typically, when you go to the market to pick up your supply of animal protein for the week, the meat you’re bringing home comes from an animal that has developed, i.e. a cow. Future Meat Technologies of Israel has created a whole new cost-effective process that may just reach the masses.

Jerusalem’s Future Meat Technologies will be opening the world’s first lab-grown meat facility in 2020, just south of Tel Aviv. The process they use for creating lab-grown cultured meat is by applying a combination of the primary components of meat, which are fat and muscle cells, and theirs are gathered from animal cells. Production is set to begin in 2020.

FMT would tell you that this opportunity was only a possibility because investors committed over $14 million to get them started. One of the major benefits of the process being used by FMT is their cost-efficiency, estimating to sell their lab-grown meat for less than $10 a pound by 2022! Not only will they be able to keep the cost down, but they’ll also be able to produce their product on a very large scale, meeting the demands of the protein market, which are very high. On their website, they further explain the process, stating:

“Future Meat Technologies groundbreaking process starts with GMO-free animal cells that grow indefinitely without animal-derived components. Our cells are grown in patented bioreactors that can replace barns, chicken coops, and meat processing factories. Products are indistinguishable from animal-based meat. This distributive technology is sustainable and cost-effective, and due to rapid growth cycles, it allows producers to rapidly adapt to changing market demands.

One of their primary bragging rights is that they can honestly tell you that while their product is produced in bioreactors, the final result is second to none, being identical to what people are used to.

Their key selling points are:

-80% Fewer Greenhouse Emissions
-99% Less Land Use
-96% Less Fresh Water Use
-100% Same Nutritional Value
