The former secretary of state was included in an assassination hit list; The initial plot targeted former National Security Advisor John Bolton.

According to multiple reports, former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo was targeted in a plot by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). The plot was reportedly in conjunction with a bounty for the killing of former Trump National Security Advisor John Bolton. The two are well known for their adamant stance in opposition to the Iranian regime.

John Bolton responded to the news, stating, “While much cannot be said publicly right now, one point is indisputable: Iran’s rulers are liars, terrorists, and enemies of the United States.”

The bounty concerning the murder of John Bolton was $300,000, which was initiated by a member of the IRGC, Shahram Poursafi. As of Wednesday, the US Justice Department unveiled charges against Poursafi. Contained within the messages regarding Bolton was an offer of $1 million for a different job, which is believed to be related to the targeting of Mike Pompeo.

During Pompeo’s tenure as secretary of state under the Trump administration, he was known globally as the unashamed spokesman for the White House against Iran, routinely taking to Twitter to call out Tehran for its violations of the Iran nuclear deal and sponsorship of terror around the world.

It is even possible that the assassination plots were in response to the killing of key Iranian officials, namely the former general in the IRGC, Qassem Soleimani, in 2020.
