Libya and Venezuela elected to serve on the United Nations Human Rights Council; both countries are extremely controversial for the brutality against their own people; The UN continues to grow in hypocrisy and in its animosity toward Israel; Danon: The Human Rights Council continues to abandon human rights and is now in the business of protecting dictators and war crimes.
Like a bad joke or a story that you think couldn’t possibly get any worse, the United Nations has now elected Libya and Venezuela to, get this-the Human Rights Council. Both countries are infamous for their governing authority’s brutality toward their own people.
Israeli Ambassador to the United Nations Danny Danon heavily criticized the election of these two nations, saying, “The Human Rights Council continues to abandon human rights and is now in the business of protecting dictators and war crimes. In Venezuela, a dictator starves his people, and in Libya, there are camps that torture African migrants… These countries are added to the Council’s ‘moral leadership,’ as the body no longer hides its obsessive hostility to Israel, and legitimizes those who blatantly violate and act against its original mandate,”.
Human Rights Watch Deputy Director for Global Advocacy, Philippe Bolopion, also criticized the election, stating, “Venezuela’s undeserved and narrow election to the U.N. Human Rights Council is a slap in the face to the country’s countless victims who have been tortured and murdered by government forces,”.
It was only a few months ago that footage surfaced of Venezuelan authorities plowing over people on the streets who were protesting the abusive government of Nicolás Maduro. People are daily seeking something to eat from the bottom of a garbage dumpster under his “leadership”. Libya is home to camps that are capturing and torturing African migrants. Kidnapping, torture, and human trafficking are the norm.
Is it really a mystery as to why so many people criticize the United Nothing, I mean Nations? Like many organizations with power, the only accountability they have is the accountability they create, and therefore limit.
