On Monday, Khalid Shuany, a member of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) was assassinated on Esteqlal (Independence) Avenue in Piranshahr, Iran; located in the western province of Iran near the border with Iraq. Piranshahr is a site of perpetual tension between the armed Iranian Kurds, who reside in Iraq, and the Iranian government. The armed Kurds include people from the Party of Free Life of Kurdistan (PJAK), and are frowned upon by leadership in Tehran, as they believe there is a connection between these Kurds and the Kurdish PKK insurgents throughout Turkey.

This attack follows a series of events in the region, as three IRGC members were ambushed and killed in the beginning of July near Piranshahr, and an additional two members were killed near the border with Turkey at the beginning of August.

On April 8, 2019, President Trump formally recognized the IRGC as a terrorist organization. Iran is the number one sponsor of terror worldwide.
