Mahshahr, a port city located along the Persian Gulf in Southwestern Iran, experienced a significant explosion in the early hours of Friday. The blast took place at the Kavoshgaran Mahshahr petrochemical plant. This particular site has been targeted in the past. However, the source of Friday’s explosion remains under investigation.
According to reports, a couple of injuries occurred amid the blast and the fire that followed, but no casualties took place.
Though the fire has reportedly been brought under control, the ongoing series of unknown explosions throughout the Islamic Republic remains a significant concern for Tehran. The sporadic wave of events, many of which are believed to have been sabotage, kicked off in the summer of 2020. At that time, blasts were occurring on a weekly basis throughout Iran.
