The United Nations Security Council will vote on a resolution calling a complete halt of Israeli settlement activities in the West Bank and East Jerusalem on Thursday evening.

Egypt, who holds a non-permanent seat in the Council and represents Arab states interests, circulated the draft resolution on Wednesday evening. The draft resolution calls for a total cease of “all settlement activities in the occupied Palestinian territory, including East Jerusalem,” citing that Israeli settlements are a “dangerously imperiling the viability of the two-state solution.”

United States President-elect Donald Trump condemned the draft resolution, calling for the United States to veto the resolution. He stated “As the United States has long maintained, peace between the Israelis and the Palestinians will only come through direct negotiations between the parties, and not through the imposition of terms by the United Nations,” Trump said. “This puts Israel in a very poor negotiating position and is extremely unfair to all Israelis.”

Israel has been clear that negotiations will only occur through direct negotiations between the State of Israel and Palestinian Authority with no preconditions.

Israel’s UN Ambassador Danny Dannon slammed the resolution, calling on the United States to veto, stating “We expect our greatest ally not to allow this one-sided and anti-Israel resolution to be adopted by the Council.” Echoing his words, Israel’s Deputy Foreign Minister Tzipi Hotovely stated “We [Israel] expect from the United States, our friends, to cast a veto, since such resolutions damage any future chances of reaching an agreement.”

Prime Minister Netanyahu responded to the surprise draft resolution “The US should veto the anti-Israel resolution at the UN Security Council on Thursday.”

The Security Council will hold their vote at 10:00 PM Israel time (3:00 PM EST, 12:00 PM PST).
