The Syrian army fired anti-aircraft missiles at Israel Friday morning following Israel Air Force airstrikes in Syria overnight, Israel operating its Arrow missile defense system for the first time in the most serious of clashes between Syria and Israel since the start of the Syrian civil war in 2011.

Ground-to-air missiles were fired by Assad’s regime from east Syria at Israel, the Arrow system intercepting one of the rockets fired.

Israel carried out airstrikes in Syria overnight targeting an attempted weapons convoy en route to Hezbollah as well as weapons caches. According to the IDF Spokesperson’s Unit “Overnight IAF [Israeli Air Force] aircraft targeted several targets in Syria. Several anti-aircraft missiles were launched from Syria following the mission and IDF Aerial Defense Systems intercepted one of the missiles,” referring to the Arrow system.

Sirens and explosions were heard in Israel’s Jordan Valley early Friday morning from Israel’s airstrikes in Syria with explosions heard as far as Jerusalem.

The Syrian army reacted to the incident swiftly claiming that it downed an Israeli jet in its attack, and hit an additional jet and scared the others away, the IDF and Israel’s Defense Ministry denying the reports, the IDF clarifying “At no point was the safety of Israeli civilians or the IAF aircraft compromised.”

It claimed “Four Israeli planes penetrated our air space at 2:40 AM via Lebanese territory and hit a military target on the way to Palmyra. Our air defense engaged them and shot down one warplane over occupied territory, hit another one and forced the rest to flee.”

It also claimed that Israel’s airstrikes were in support of “terrorist gangs” in Syria and that the mission was a “desperate attempt to raise their deteriorating morale and divert attention away from the victories which Syrian Army is making in the face of the terrorist organizations.”

It threatened to respond to the “Zionist enemy” issuing the statement that the incident “will be responded to directly with all possible means.”
