Following reports that delivery was frozen following Israeli intelligence, first shipment arrives in Iran; Complete system to be delivered by mid-2016

Russia has delivered the first shipment of the S-300 air defense system to Iran Monday, the delivery confirmed by Iran’s Foreign Ministry. The delivery of the entire system is expected to be completed by mid-2016.

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Jaberi Ansari stated on the shipment Monday “We had already announced that despite several times of change in time of delivery, the deal is on its path of implementation and today I should announce that the first phase of the agreement is implemented and the process will continue.”

Russia reported in March that it had decided to freeze its shipment of S-300 anti-aircraft missile to system to Iran. According Kuwait’s Al-Jarida, Russia’s decision to halt the arms delivery came after Israel provided Russia with intelligence that Iran violated an agreement with Russia, more than one, when it provided “sophisticated Russian-made weaponry”(SA-22 surface-to-air missile system) to the terrorist organization Hezbollah.

The deal was first made in 2007 and was stopped due to pressure from world powers. The deal was again suspended in 2010 due to United Nation’s Security Council’s sanctions on the Islamic Republic. The $800 million arms sale to Iran was the first major arms deal reinstated during the creation of a nuclear deal between Iran and world powers.
