Israel reportedly carried out additional strikes northeast of Damascus overnight Friday, targeting four Syrian army convoys carrying ballistic missiles. Initial reports claim the convoy was attempting to transfer Syrian scud missiles to Hezbollah. It is the fifth reported strikes in Syria in the past month.

Syrian media reported drone strikes on a Syrian Army convoy leaving the 155th brigade base north of Damascus in the Qalamoun Mountains near the Syrian-Lebanese border, the Saudi news channel Al Arabiya stating that “Drones attacked a weapons truck on the outskirts of Damascus while on their way to Lebanon.” Other reports claimed airstrikes.

Israel carried out airstrikes on Syrian army and Hezbollah targets in the Qalamoun region last Saturday, Syrian media claiming Hezbollah militants and soldiers of Assad’s regime were killed in the strikes. Additionally airstrikes were carried out the same week in the same region, a reported eight Hezbollah militants and five Syrian Army soldiers killed from the attacks, the Israeli Air Force reportedly carrying out four airstrikes.

Qalamoun is a major transit point for Hezbollah and the Syrian Army, the attacks in the region carried out to prevent weapons transfers from Syria to Hezbollah.

Prime Minister Netanyahu confirmed Israeli covert and preventative operations in Syria Wednesday, stating that Israel is in fact “operating in Syria from time to time in order to stop the country from becoming a front against Israel… We are [Israel] operating against another terror front that Iran is trying to build in the Golan, and in order to thwart the transfer of particularly deadly weapons from Syria to Lebanon. We will continue doing this.”

In a meeting Thursday with United States Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, John McCain, Israel’s Defense Minister, Moshe Ya’alon addressed Iran’s funding and arms provision of terrorist organizations. He stated on that “the vast funds that will soon flow to Iran after the removal of the sanctions will produce much more advanced weaponry and buy advanced weapons systems which will be used to arm terror organizations in the area. They are arming Hezbollah, Hamas, and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad. Iran is working non-stop to arm Hezbollah with advanced weapons. We will not allow the opening of a new front against us in the Golan, and when necessary we act against these intentions.”
