The Palestinians have officially joined the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague today, Palestinian Foreign Minister Riad Malki meeting with court officials today.

Palestinian Authority Mahmoud Abbas signed the Roman Statute in December following the United Nations Security Council’s decision against the Palestinian Authority’s statehood bid.

Following the Security Council’s rejection of their proposal Abbas threatened to join the ICC in order to charge Israel with war crimes during last summer’s operation in the Gaza Strip, Operation Protective Edge.

Senior Palestinian official Saeb Erekat stated that “The legal and technical committees have been extensively working on finalizing the two files” in reference to war crime charges. Chief Prosecutor Fatou Bensounda announced earlier this year after the Palestinian Authority’s request to join the ICC that a preliminary review of the charges was already underway. Erekat stated, “We will conduct all practical moves directly after Palestine is officially declared an ICC member on Wednesday.”
