Israel announced that it would be sending aid to assist Mexico following the devastating earthquake that hit the country on Friday.

Israel’s Foreign Ministry, Ambassador to Mexico, Yoni Peled and Prime Minister Netanyahu all confirmed Sunday morning that the aid would be sent in the coming days.

During his weekly cabinet meeting this morning, Prime Minister Netanyahu confirmed he had reached out to Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto and offered Israel’s assistance in reconstruction and in “any other assistance that we can give”.

Ahead of his visit to Mexico this week, he stated “As you know, Mexico experienced a severe earthquake over the weekend. Israel sends condolences to the families of the victims. We understand that these are difficult days for this country, for the Mexican people. In my talks with the President of Mexico, we will offer aid in reconstruction or any other assistance that we can give. I will then leave for the US and I will address the UN General Assembly. Our great friend the US is also currently dealing with severe natural disasters and we all hope that it will pass the coming storm in peace.”

Netanyahu will travel to Argentina, Columbia and Mexico this week.

Israel’s government additionally approved a donation of $1 million to Houston’s Jewish community. MK Naftali Bennett announced the donation last week, stating on the donation “The city of Houston was hurt badly last week, and the Jewish community, 70% of which lived in the flooded neighborhoods, was hit hard…Schools and synagogues were flooded and can’t be used. The old-age home and JCC [Jewish Community Center] were damaged, and hundreds of families will remain homeless… For years the Jewish communities stood by Israel when it needed their help; now it is our turn to stand by Houston’s Jewish community.”

Israel, as with majority of global natural disasters, acted as first responders to Texas, two of Israel’s main humanitarian aid groups, IsrAID and iAid, sending relief teams and much needed supplies to assist during Tropical Storm Harvey last Tuesday.
