Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei accused the United States of creating the “myth” nuclear weapons in order to portray Iran as a threat internationally and has ordered Iran’s Revolutionary guard to increase their “defensive preparedness” in the event of any military action by the United States.

His remarks come just a few days before nuclear talks between world powers and Iran are to continue in Vienna. Talks will be held on Wednesday and Thursday.

Khamenei stated that the United States “created the myth of nuclear weapons so they could say the Islamic Republic is a source of threat. No, the source of threat is America itself…. The other side is methodically and shamelessly threatening us militarily … even if they did not make these overt threats, we would have to be prepared.”

He addressed the Revolutionary Guard ordering that, “All bodies from the ministry of defense to the army and the Sepah [Revolutionary Guards] should increase their military and defensive preparedness. This should be regarded as an official directive.”

His remarks coming after Chairman of the United States Joint Chief of Staff, General Martin Dempsey addressed the arms deal of S-300 missiles defense system between Iran and Russia last week. Dempsey stated that the United States was aware of the “potential for that system to be sold to Iran for several years” and that “The military option that I owe the president to both encourage a diplomatic solution and if the diplomacy fails to ensure that Iran does not achieve a nuclear weapon is intact.”

The Deputy Leader of the Revolutionary Guard, Gen. Hossein Salami also responded to Dempsey’s statements and warned that any inspectors in Iran as part of a nuclear agreement with world powers would not be permitted to visit Iran’s military sites. The remarks were directed at several United States leaders stating publically that military inspection and inquiry would be part of a final deal with Iran.

Salami stated that Iran “will respond with hot lead (bullets) to those who speak of it” in reference to inspections of military sites… They will not even be permitted to inspect the most normal military site in their dreams.” He additionally stated that inspection of Iran’s military would allow for spies, stating “Iran will not become a paradise for spies. We will not roll out the red carpet for the enemy.”
