Iceland’s capital city, Reykjavik, passed a resolution banning all Israeli-made products in protest of the “Israeli occupation on the Palestinian people” and Israel’s “racist apartheid policy”.
The city council voted the resolution, initiated by Councilwoman Björk Vilhelmsdóttir who stated on the ban, “I believe that the city is sending a clear message that it will not purchase products from Israel while Israel oppresses another people on the basis of ethnicity and race, and continues having the wall inside Palestine.”
Iceland continues to be strongly opposed and critical of the State of Israel. The country was a leading supporter of the vote for Palestinian non-member observer state status in the United Nations. It also adopted a resolution recognizing Palestinian rights to an independent and sovereign state.
A spokesperson for Israel’s Foreign Ministry, Emmanual Nahshon, stating on the resolution, “A volcano of hatred is erupting out of the city council building in Reykjavik. Without any reason or justification, other than pure hatred, we hear calls to boycott Israel. We hope someone in Iceland comes to their senses and stops the blindness and the one-sidedness that is directed at Israel, the only democracy in the Middle East.”
