Guatemala will also relocate it’s embassy to Jerusalem in May of this year.

Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales made the announcement during a speech at the AIPAC annual conference in Washington Sunday. He stated “In May of this year, we will celebrate Israel’s 70th anniversary and under my instructions two days after the US will move its embassy, Guatemala will return and permanently move its embassy to Jerusalem.”

Morales thanked President Trump for “leading the way. His courageous decision has encouraged us to do what is right.”

Media reports surfaced of Guatemala’s move following a meeting between Prime Minister Netanyahu and Morales in Washington on Sunday afternoon. The meeting was one of Netanyahu’s first in Washington as part of his five-day tour in United States.

During their meeting, Netanyahu thanked Morales and Guatemala for it support of Israel and Jerusalem as its capital stating, “Thank you for everything you’re doing, for recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.” He added “I hope soon you will move your embassy to Jerusalem; we hope,” to which Morales replied “It is an honor and it is the right thing to do.”

Following Trump’s announcement that the United States recognized Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, Guatemala followed, announcing in December that it would also move it’s embassy to Jerusalem. During United Nations General assembly vote on Jerusalem following Trump’s declaration, Guatemala was one of the nine states to vote against the resolution.
