An Egyptian appeals court has canceled its previous ruling made to list Hamas as a terrorist organization.

Hamas was listed as banned in Egypt as a terrorist organization in February this year, its military wing, Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, listed as a terrorist organization in January. The decisions were made by Egypt during the overthrow of former Egyptian President Morsi and Egypt’s military campaign to eradicate terrorism, mainly the Muslim Brotherhood, from Egypt with months of military crackdown on terrorist cells within the Sinai. Hamas activity was officially banned in Egypt in 2014.

The Egypt’s Urgent Matters Appeals Court cited its reasons for the appeal to remove Hamas due to “lack of jurisdiction”.

A spokesman for Hamas, Sami Abu Zuhri stated that the ruling was “correcting a previous mistake” that “the decision today represents a commitment by Cairo to its strong role towards the Palestinian cause. There is no doubt that it will have positive results and impacts on the relation between Hamas and Cairo.”

Egyptian lawyer Ashraf Farahat, who initiated and participated in placing Hamas on the lost of terrorist organizations stated in response to the court’s removal of Hamas that, “This ruling does not return us to zero. I have two rulings placing the Brotherhood and the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades on the list of terrorist organizations.”

Egypt continues to oversee the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas since the end of Operation Protective Edge in summer 2014. Hamas refuses to direct talks with Israel, and Israel holds official policy that the State of Israel will not negotiate with terrorists and those calling for the destruction of the State of Israel.
