Amir’s commentary on developments surrounding Jerusalem, Dec. 5, 2017.
Latest reports are that President Trump today called some local Middle Eastern leaders and informed them of his intention to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel tomorrow. Following his speech tomorrow, President Trump will sign the famous waiver that will give him six more months before the US embassy can move to Jerusalem. Shocked Palestinian President Abbas turned to Russian President Putin and Pope Francis for help. The Palestinians promise violent resistance to Trump’s declaration.
It’s about time that 70 years after Israel was recognized as a sovereign state it’s capital will be recognized as well.
The Sunni world will protest and Turkey will use this crisis to “show leadership” and severe all diplomatic relations with Israel. By doing so, Turkish President Erdogan will challenge the soft Saudi approach that as of yesterday was reported to be OK with Trump’s move with suggesting the town of Abu Dis as Palestinian capital instead.
The Iran-Turkey-Russia alliance is no longer just about Syria anymore. It’s about Jerusalem. It’s about Israel.
“… Behold, I will make Jerusalem a cup of drunkenness to all the surrounding peoples, when they lay siege against Judah and Jerusalem. 3 And it shall happen in that day that I will make Jerusalem a very heavy stone for all peoples; all who would heave it away will surely be cut in pieces, though all nations of the earth are gathered against it…”
