Amir’s commentary on Emmanuel Macron’s mysterious rise to power and how the French President is now seen as the “Savior of Europe”
French President Emmanuel Macron was labeled by The Economist this week to be the “Savior of Europe”, the French president quickly rising to power in the French elections followed by then landslide victory in France’s Parliament.
Macron’s Republic on the Move (LREM) together with the MoDem party won a sweeping majority for the French National Assembly, despite the lowest turnout in 50 years by voters.
Macron has assumed leadership that was never given to him, evident through his words and actions. This was clear when he gave a speech in English (French presidents never do this) on the Paris Climate Agreement, just days in office as France’s new president without a majority in parliament, criticizing President Trump and the United States for its withdraw from the agreement.
He called on Trump to “make the planet great again,” even offering American citizens France as a “second homeland”, stating “To all scientists, engineers, engineers, entrepreneurs, responsible citizens who were disappointed by the decision of the United States, I want to say that they will find in France a second homeland,” stating “I call on them: Come and work here with us — to work together on concrete solutions for our climate, our environment. I can assure you, France will not give up the fight.”
He also publicly denounced Brexit. After a meeting with Prime Minister May, he told the U.K that the “door was still open” for the U.K. to remain in the EU.
In France, he has been instrumental in the French quietly throwing its traditional political system out of the window. His party, LREM, composed of political novices, rose to power in less than a year’s time, sweeping a majority of France’s parliament. This is history in the making for France.
Macron was able to provide the change the French people wanted in government: a new, fresh face, committed to a strong, reformed France as a major, if not most significant leader within the European Union.
The “Jupiter Model” was used through out Macron’s presidential campaign and has become the President’s method of governing. The theory refers to Macron’s isolation from previous friends, colleagues and advisors, mainly that of his silence and lack of access to the French head of state- like Jupiter, god of the heavens.
Macron rarely appears in public, and communication with the president is only permitted to his closest advisors. France’s prime minister will work with the new parliament and maintain Macron’s order.
Macron has been known to speak little and rarely agrees to be interviewed. His mystery and isolation are not just within the political realm, but applies to the media.
His method of ruling is mysterious and behind closed doors.
As I have taught and wrote about last week, Macron’s government is centered on the European Union. Within a Europe filled with fear and confusion post Brexit, Macron was a light of promised reform.
Just last week, a spokesman for Macron stated on the party’s victory in elections for the French National Assembly “We in France want to build a strong Europe economically, politically and militarily,” stating that it would now (with the election of Macron and majority in the Assembly) be easier for Europe to be global player. He stated that Europe has not been the center of the globe as it does not know what I wants, pointing out the globe turns to the United States and Russia for guidance, not Europe… We want to build a strong Europe that will speak with one voice, that will have one army, and perhaps even one economy… We will have to worry about the rest of the world, which will make it easier to do what we have to do” adding that “no one knows what will be of Donald Trump.”
